How to create a Scratch Card in Qualifio?

In this article, we'll walk you through the steps to create and customise a Scratch Card campaign in Qualifio.

A Scratch Card is an instant win campaign where participants scratch a card to reveal whether they have won a prize. It combines the prize mechanics of our instant win formats with a fully customisable scratch experience.

Campaign creation and setup

Get your campaign ready

To create a Scratch Card campaign:

  1. Open Qualifio and click Create a new campaign
  2. Select Instant wins > Scratch Card
  3. Create your campaign and configure your usual campaign steps
💡 Because the Scratch Card is an instant win format, the campaign set up works like our other instant wins, such as the classic Instant Win, Wheel of Fortune or Jackpot.

However, once the instant win mechanics are ready, head over to the Game step, this time, to customise the Scratch Card itself.

Choose a Scratch Card to customise

In the Game step, you'll find ready-to-use Scratch Card designs, that you can use as a starting point.

Select the one you want to use and click Customise this game.

If custom Scratch Cards have already been created for your account, you can also select one of those instead.

Note: Custom games allow you to save your own reusable Scratch Card designs. Open an existing Scratch Card, customise it however you like and select Save as new game when you're done.

Scratch Card customisation

The game editor is divided into several tabs. Let's go over the different sections and what they're used for.

Layout

The Layout tab contains the general display settings of your Scratch Card.

Card size

You can define the width and height of the Scratch Card.

Use these settings to adapt the card's proportions to your design and the assets you want participants to scratch.

Loader

Under the advanced settings, you can customise the loader that is displayed if the game assets need more time to load.

You can configure:

  • the loading bar colour
  • the background colour

Scratchcard

The Scratchcard tab is where you'll configure the appearance and scratching behaviour of your card.

Scratch Layer

First, customise the layer participants will actually scratch.

You can choose between two scratch layer modes:

  • Image: upload an image to use as the scratchable layer
  • Colour: enter a color code to create a solid scratchable layer (ex.: a golden color)

This layer covers the result of the Scratch Card until the participant scratches it away.

Winner and loser images

You can upload two different images that will be revealed underneath the scratchable layer:

  • Winner image: displayed when the participant wins
  • Loser image: displayed when the participant does not win
⚠️ Both images include an alt text field. We strongly recommend filling in these fields, especially when important information such as "You won!" or "Better luck next time!" is included directly in the image. The alternative text allows this information to be communicated to participants using a screen reader.

Accessibility button

Scratching with a mouse, finger or other pointing device isn't suitable for every participant. That's why the Scratch Card included an accessibility button that allows participants to scratch the card automatically.

You can customise the button to match your campaign design. The following options are available:

  • Shape: rounded or square
  • Label: the text displayed on the button
  • Font: select one of the available fonts or provide a URL for a custom font
  • Text size: define the font size in pixels
  • Text colour
  • Background colour
  • Outline colour: used when navigating to the button via a keyboard or similar device
  • Opacity: from 0 being transparent to 1 being fully coloured
  • Height of the button: defined as a percentage of the Scratch Card height

The width of the button will adapt automatically to its text.

Reveal threshold

Under the advanced settings, you can define how much of the card the participant needs to scratch before the result is automatically revealed. The percentage can range from 1% to 100%.

For example:

  • At 100%, participants need to scratch virtually the entire card before the result is fully revealed
  • At 50%, the result is revealed once half of the scratchable area has been removed
  • At 1%, a signle interaction with the card car be enough to reveal the result

Example at 50% threshold

The default value is 70%, which we recommend as a good balance between the feeling of actually scratching the card and keeping the experience quick and comfortable for participants.

Custom cursor and scratch size

Under the advanced settings, you can also enable the custom cursor option. When enabled, additional settings become available to:

  • upload an image that replaces the standard cursor while scratching (to add a coin, for example)
  • customise the size of the scratch area or "brush stroke"

Uploading a custom cursor image is optional, you can therefore enable this setting simply to increase or decrease the size of the area removed with each scratching movement while keeping the participant's normal cursor.

Sound effects

The Sound effects tab lets you add audio to make the Scratch Card experience more immersive.

All sound effects are optional.

Scratching sound

You can upload a sound that plays while the participant scratches the card.

For example, you can use a scratching or scraping sound to reproduce the feeling of scratching a physical ticket.

Win and lose sounds

You can also configure different sounds for the final reveal:

  • Win sound: plays when a winning card is revealed
  • Lose sound: plays when a losing card is revealed

These sounds play once when the result is revealed and do not repeat.

What does the participant experience look like?

The Scratch Card follows the usual Game campaign flow. When a form is included, participants first complete the Form before accessing the Scratch Card.

Once the Scratch Card has been scratched, the winning or losing image is fully revealed. The corresponding Exit screen is then displayed underneath the revealed Scratch Card. This means participants can still see their scratch ticket and its result together with the winner or non-winner message you've configured for the campaign.

Saving the Scratch Card

Once your configuration is ready, you can save it in two ways:

  • Save & close updates the game you're currently using
  • Save as new game creates a new custom game that you can reuse in other Scratch Card campaigns

Saving your design as a new game is particularly useful if you want to create reusable Scratch Card templates for your brand or recurring campaigns.

Once everything is ready, complete the rest of your campaign settings and publish your Scratch Card. 🎉
